Library
With over 6,500 books, Santa Maria's library is the intellectual hub of the school. Students have regular access to the library and often turn to our well-stocked shelves for class projects as well as pleasure reading. Classroom teachers collaborate closely with the librarian and incorporate library reading and research into their lesson plans. Thanks to our automated card catalogue, students may also check out books with ease.
We received a $5,500 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation in 2009 and an additional $3,000 grant this past year to purchase new library books. From fall 2002 to spring 2006, Santa Maria participated in the Library Connections program, which supplied the library with books, furniture, and much-needed financial aide. We continue to seek out support to grow our already strong collection. | | Technology/Computer Lab
Santa Maria offers a comprehensive technology curriculum. The computer lab is equipped with over 40 desktop and laptop computers, and all students learn essential technology skills during weekly computer classes. The computer lab also houses one of Santa Maria's SMART Boards, which our technology director uses daily to instruct students. The lab is conveniently located within the library and students regularly use it to conduct online research. Classrooms are also outfitted with computers, and we have wireless internet throughout the building. | | Classroom, Inc. Virtual Internship Program
Students in the 4th-8th grades participate in the Classroom, Inc. computer-simulated internship program. Working in small groups, students make key business decisions that affect the program's outcome. In the process, students also strengthen reading, math, and critical thinking skills. Classroom, Inc. is offered to the middle school students as two separate programs after school. Students are given the choice of taking part in the What's Up Magazine or The Kalliope Performing Arts Center simulations. | Science Lab
Santa Maria's recently renovated science lab is well-stocked with microscopes, beakers, Petri dishes, and everything else our young scientists need to conduct experiments. The lab is available for all students and teachers, and features laptops, wireless internet, and a SMART Board. A consultant from the NY Hall of Science works with the faculty to ensure the lab's resources are being integrated into the science curriculum and is being used to its full potential. | | Creative Classrooms Visual Arts Program
This program promotes art and literacy through projects that encourage personal reflection and critical thinking. Students use a range of mediums, including watercolor, charcoal, acrylic, and colored pencil. Within an assignment's parameters, students have substantial freedom to experiment and craft art that is uniquely theirs. | | Paul Effman Music Service
Paul Effman has served Catholic schools for over 30 years. Through this program, once a week all 2nd through 5th graders learn to play the recorder. 3rd through 8th grade students have the option to join the school band to learn to play brass, percusion, and woodwind instruments. Kindergarten and 1st grade also receive an introductory music curriculum. | | School Choir Students in 4th through 8th grades have the option to join the school choir. Students meet once a week after school to practice as a group. This choir performs at school and family masses, and they are an integral part of the school's Christmas show each December. | Dancing Classrooms Dancing Classrooms has successfully been teaching students ballroom dance for over 15 years. Through the Dancing Classrooms program all students in 5th and 8th grade receive twice a week instruction in ballroom dancing at Santa Maria and participate in a final showcase.
