New at SMS

Cooke Center Math Consultant

Thanks to the generous support of the school's Patrons, we have hired a consultant from the Cooke Center. The consultant is working with the faculty to restructure our math curriculum to better reach each child. Faculty members are increasing the use of hands-on materials that excite students about math. For instance, the younger grades recently constructed "apple creatures" from apples, marshmallows, raisins, and toothpicks. More than just a fun activity, this project builds estimating skills. Students were first asked to estimate how many materials they would use and later they compared these estimates with the actual total. We are excited to observe the continued positive effects of our math consultant.

Newly Renovated Gym

Thanks to the generous support of the Endowment for Inner-City Education, Camulos Capital LP, and other committed donors, Santa Maria recently completed major gym renovations. Our gym now features new windows, blinds, and blue safety padding on all four walls. The entire Santa Maria community is overjoyed by the transformation. As 4th grader Allyson raved, "I think Santa Maria's new gym is the best in the world! Now everyone loves to run and play in the gym."

In addition to physical education classes, we use the gym for our Pee-Wee, JV, and Varsity Basketball programs as well as all-school events and assemblies like the annual Christmas Show.
